What is UltraClear?

UltraClear is a ground-breaking new laser treatment that gives multiple benefits with minimal downtime and discomfort. Excitingly, this is the first ever cold fiber fractional laser to be FDA approved for the treatment of all skin types and tones.

Like any laser it works through ablation - or in other words, removing small parts of the skin. This is a ‘controlled injury’ which stimulates skin regeneration while increasing collagen and elastin production.

Fractional laser: how does it work?

Traditionally we have used what we call ‘full ablation’, where the whole top layer of the skin is removed. This gives amazing results but the recovery period is long and there is a potentially higher risk of side effects.

A big breakthrough came with the arrival of fractional laser. This is where we treat only parts of the skin, leaving other areas untouched. Healing is much quicker, and the regenerating results can be very good, although not as dramatic as those achieved from full ablation. Up until now, we have had two types of laser for ablation: the CO2 full ablation laser and the Erbium YAG fractional laser.

UltraClear is a fractional laser that uses a new wavelength specifically developed to be far more comfortable for the patient, as well as safe for all skin tones. It uses a first-of-its-kind cold laser beam which minimises unwanted thermal damage. This dramatically reduces post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and other thermal-induced side effects which are common in darker skin types.

What does UltraClear treat?

The advanced fractional laser technology stimulates the natural healing and restructuring process of the skin, leading to the growth of new skin cells and increased production of collagen and elastin. Resulting in clearer, tighter skin with a revitalised and youthful glow.

There are several key concerns we can treat at the same time. Firstly, pigmentation and age spots caused by sun damage reacts very well to UltraClear. We can also use a deeper setting to improve skin texture, which is particularly effective for people who have deep lines, wrinkles and/or scars.

Our most popular UltraClear treatment combines both a superficial and deep setting, meaning we can target two visual signs of ageing in one. Clear, smooth, radiant skin is the holy grail for me, and UltraClear brings our patients closer to that goal.

Why UltraClear?

"I'm a real fan of laser resurfacing, but traditionally, the treatments I use are quite aggressive. Although they give me great results, not everyone is willing to put up with the discomfort.

Don't get me wrong, I'll still be doing all my CO2 resurfacing but UltraClear opens up the option for patients who mainly want one or two days of downtime and we can do a really light application for those patients. But at the other end of the spectrum, we may have patients who are prone to pigmentation or darker skin types who wouldn't be appropriate for CO2 resurfacing but for the first time, they now have a treatment option for their scarring."

What to expect during Ultraclear treatment?

First, we carry out a consultation to assess suitability and discuss the treatment. We never carry out treatments on the same day, as it’s vital to allow patients time to reflect on their proposed plan and come back with any questions.

On the day of treatment, patients sign consent forms and have confidential ‘before’ photographs taken so we can monitor their results. We then apply local anaesthetic cream if required. At the lighter settings, the UltraClear is so comfortable that many people need no numbing cream at all.

During the treatment, we use pre-agreed settings which are tailored to the patient’s desired results and downtime period.

After treatment has finished, we cool the skin, apply ointment and patients are free to leave. Typically we follow up daily throughout the healing period by asking patients to send us photos.

We complete the treatment process with a follow-up appointment and take ‘after’ images to fully assess the results.
